We were delighted to have the opportunity recently to try three out of four flavors of Mrs. Smith’s Signature Deep Dish pies.  The only one we were unable to find in our area was Peach Pie with Cream Cheese Icing.  They are available at most Wal-Mart Supercenters nationwide, or you can find other retailers that offer them at Mrs. Smith’s website here.

The Chef’s training at Johnson and Wales University was focused mostly on Culinary Arts, with some instruction in baking, but as we have mentioned before it is not his forte!  Needless to say, we do not bake from scratch a whole lot in our home.  We don’t even eat desserts often.  Perhaps in the future when our children are a little older and more self-reliant, baking from scratch will be something we can do more of, but for now, when we have desserts, frozen is perfect for us.

Cherry Pie with Butter Fudge Sauce

Mrs. Smith’s asked us to customize the pies, which we were able to do with two of the three varieties we tried, the first being the Cherry Pie with Butter Fudge Sauce.  The Chef made a delicious topping for this pie: Toasted Brown-Sugar Almonds.  I loved it.  It was a perfect choice to combine with the flavors of the cherries and butter fudge sauce.

Here is the recipe if you would like to give it a try yourself:

Recipe: Toasted Brown-Sugar Almonds

pie-cherry2

Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1-1/2 cups sliced almonds
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Set oven on broil, low setting.
  2. Melt butter in microwave.
  3. Combine melted butter and almonds in small bowl.
  4. Spread almonds evenly on a sheet pan, and sprinkle with brown sugar.
  5. Place under broiler and stir occasionally, using a wooden spoon. Toast almonds until brown sugar is dissolved and almonds are slightly brown, being careful not to burn them.

After you bake Mrs. Smith’s Signature Deep Dish Cherry Pie, sprinkle this topping evenly on top of the pie and drizzle the butter fudge sauce in a lattice pattern.

Dutch Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce

The second pie we tried was Mrs. Smith’s Signature Deep Dish Dutch Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce.  We chose not to customize this one, and it was delicious just as it comes with the caramel sauce.  This was The Chef’s favorite of the three.  Williams-Sonoma has a nut assortment mixed with a light handmade caramel that could be used to customize this pie!

Pumpkin Pie with Cream Cheese Icing

The last of the pies we tried was the Pumpkin Pie with Cream Cheese Icing, and The Chef made a Cinnamon and Sugar Walnut topping to customize this one.  This was my first time trying Pumpkin Pie, believe it or not!  Both The Chef and I thought the nutmeg spice in the pie was a little strong for our taste, but for those of you who love nutmeg, you will love this pie!

If you would like to try the topping we made with it as well, here is that recipe for you:

Recipe: Cinnamon & Sugar Walnuts

pie-pumpkin2

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Place medium non-stick skillet on low to medium heat. Add walnuts and toss occasionally, being careful not to burn.
  2. Once walnuts start to brown slightly, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Toss continuously until sugar is dissolved, being careful not to burn.

Quick notes

It is hard to rate this topping without having taste-tested it on its own. The pie had quite a bit of nutmeg flavoring, which in our opinion, may have contributed to a spiciness that we could neither attribute to the nutmeg or our walnut topping.

To customize the Mrs. Smith’s Signature Deep Dish Pumpkin Pie with this topping, simply sprinkle the walnut topping over the pie and drizzle with cream cheese in lattice pattern after the pie has cooled completely.  (Note: Our photo shows that we did not wait until the pie had cooled sufficiently, so the cream cheese melted over the top of the pie!)

After making three of these pies, we decided they might work better for us to allow them to cool for longer than the recommended time.  When we cut into them for serving, they had not firmed up enough to cut into “well-shaped” pie slices!  We would love to be able to give the peach variety a try as we eat lots of peaches in our home.  It is a favorite fruit for our children, so hopefully that pie will be available in the future in our area.

And now, for the Mrs. Smith’s and Williams Sonoma giveaway, which we are thrilled to host for Mrs. Smith’s Signature Deep Dish Pies!
