The fad diet train wreck!
Have you ever tried the latest fad diet, only to find yourself having success losing weight initially but not being able to keep the weight off? Or maybe you really didn’t have success at all with the diet? Or maybe you’ve tried many types of diets to lose weight but have not found the right one for you?
If you can relate to any of these questions, you understand what I mean when I say, “The fad diet train wreck” above, and you will enjoy this podcast interview with Laura Wellington, author of The Four Star Diet.

I had the opportunity to read it recently when Laura’s publicist contacted me after she found out we were doing a military-focused series on our food blog. She thought I might be interested in taking a look at the book.
Knowing how big an issue dieting is in America, I was interested in what this particular book might have to say on the topic, particularly with a title like that and the introduction Laura’s publicist gave:
It is receiving an enormous amount of press and rave reviews from its readers and the likes of major media outlets, including The Huffington Post, iVillage.com Health, Yahoo and many more.
Two components which are being hailed as “refreshing” and set this book apart are that the book does not endorse or espouse any particular diet anywhere in it and the book underscores every lesson with wisdom or examples from the lives of world changing leaders, including names such as Winston Churchill, Malcolm X, Jacqueline Kennedy, Henry Ford, Mahatma Gandhi, and even Dr. Seuss.
Women seem to be navigating their lives and careers to it just as readily as they are navigating their diets, personal health, and overall happiness. Already selling globally since its release date of February 5, 2013, retailers have sold out several times since this date, including Amazon. Military personnel also love it and influential entertainment names are endorsing it, including the founder of E! who wrote the Foreward.
The author’s interesting unusual background includes being a young widowed left with 4 little kids to raise and close to penniless. She transformed herself into a mega-successful entrepreneur and award-winning children’s educational television creator. Although she never served in the military, her father served in the army and her uncle did as well. He fought in Korea.
We have enjoyed featuring stories and recipes from American heroes who’ve served in the United States Military as a part of our Great Stories and Recipes from Great American Heroes series. Today’s feature serves as a transition to a more general type of focus for our podcast … we are calling it Foodie Talk with Chef John and Anne, and we are hosting it via Blog Talk Radio.
Since Laura’s father served in the military, she was able to share with us during the interview a story about how his service impacted her life growing up. We also discuss some highlights from her book. We had to break up the interview into two parts, and we will be publishing Part 2 soon (stay tuned!).
Before we get to the podcast portion where you can listen to the interview, Laura is giving away an autographed copy of her book to one reader/listener. I will include the entry form for the giveaway and the recipe Laura shared in a separate post tomorrow. I wanted to go ahead and get Part 1 of this interview to you, because I think you will find it interesting and full of valuable insight!
I found the book refreshing and a great reminder of lots of common sense ideas and nuggets of wisdom that sometimes get lost in what Laura calls, “This very noisy world we call our own.” I know you will enjoy what she has to share, and the principles in her book truly are applicable not only to dieting, but other areas of life as well:
