With another school year in full swing by now, I know I want my children to get as strong a start as possible. The beginning of a new year is ripe with hope for what the year will bring and the successes our children can experience.
For the younger ones, it is a chance to lay a strong foundation for their entire academic career! For those in middle school, it is a time of great adjustment to many changes, developmentally and also academically as they experience the world of juggling the expectations of more than one teacher, changing classes, and more on top of the difficult stage it can be as hormones begin changing too. Then in high school, thoughts begin to center around preparing for college or what will happen post-graduation if your child wants to pursue a different path and enter the workforce right after high school.
If you have children in college, you can still benefit from the information we are sharing in this post, as your role may shift to more of an adviser rather than the heavy involvement you’ve been accustomed to having in the decisions your child has faced up to this point in time. It’s a huge transitional time for parents and children, but one that can be significant in helping propel your child on to success during the college years and beyond. Be sure and check out our earlier show, The Freshman 15 and How to Avoid It, for additional tips and information that may be helpful if your child is just beginning college this year.
In our Foodie Talk with Chef John and Anne that aired this past Sunday, September 8, I discussed with Valerie Remy-Milora, of Scrumptious Moms, ways we as parents can help our children have success at school. This show included some topics aside from the obvious helping them with their homework or where they are struggling academically.

Free Download for Every Listener!
One of several topics discussed was the importance of eating a nutritious breakfast, and we are making available to every listener a free download with tons of recipe ideas if you need some fresh inspiration for breakfast. That is a meal for us that we can tend to eat the same things over and over again. I’m always looking for some new ideas to try to have a better variety.

This is very interesting. I always thought that nutrition was closely related to how they did in school!
I have a 1st grader and she is very picky when it comes to food. A great and healthy breakfast is very important to start the day. Thanks for this helpful post.
gonna have to look through this. i’ve been running out of ideas for what to give my son & i think he is sick of what he’s been getting. thanks for posting this.
Nice breakfast recipe source! I also want to learn many new healthy breakfast ideas for schooling students in my house too.
I’m going to download the breakfast ideas right now! I know I have lots of trouble trying to come up with new breakfast ideas for my daughter!
Healthy recipes definitely give kids a boost when it comes to their academics. I’m glad you are bringing attention to this connection.
Breakfast is so important! It’s not always easy to get my kids to eat it. I trick them and play with the food.. make it fun 😉 They eat it
I can only agree that eating healthy is paramount to performing well in school. No sugar, sweets or anything that has sugar in it but a lot of fruit and vegetables.
Smoothies are great to start the day with for kids as well!
Thanks for this post. I looked around and checked out the links. I listened to some of the podcast and will be back to catch the rest when I have a bit more time. I do agree with the guest that routine is key no matter what age the child is.
So glad for all the breakfast ideas! We end up doing the same thing most of the time, either yogurt with berries and granola, or turkey sausage with eggs or a whole wheat waffle. Kinda boring after a while.
I can’t wait to check out all the breakfast recipes. I feel so much better when I have a good breakfast and I try to make sure my toddler is fueled with something super healthy and ready to be active at daycare as well!
I am so bad about skipping breakfast. I need to get back into a good morning routine.
I’ve always been told that breakfast is most important meal of the day. I always encourage my kids to eat it before they leave the house but they go to school and eat it anyway which is good. Me on the other hand skip it altogether. I need to follow my own advice.
Break fast is so important . I hardly miss .
Breakfast is so important. And yet it is the one we struggle with the most. My kids are not morning people. Yet we have to get up early and be ready for the bus that comes early. They hate eating so early in the morning. And honestly I can’t blame them. I struggle with it too. But we still do all I can to get some breakfast into their bellies before they go off. Thankfully their school allows them to bring a snack that they can eat during the recesses. So I always send healthy snacks for their recess breaks…sort of like a brunch.
Thanks for sharing. Great Post
Nothing is like good meal, kids do better at school with good healthy food.
My mum shouldn’t read this, I am a school going {little} kid and I really hate breakfast haha!
I absolutely agree! Breakfast is so so important! Luckily I have no problems with my son. He loves breakfast and would never leave the house without it
So many student don’t eat breakfast before school, especially at the high school level. I don’t know how many of my students have told me that no one in their house eats breakfast, but then they start nodding off in class during even the most engaging of activities. It’s so much more important than people realize.
Breakfast is so important, especially if it is nutritious.
My kids hate to eat breakfast, but I make them eat something anyway. No sense being hungry and not able to concentrate later in the day.
Breakfast the most important meal of the day. That’s what I was taught, it starts the tone of your day. Gets your metabolism going and wakes up your brain for a busy day of work or school. And not a bowl of sugary cereal. Good nutrition. Great ideas.
I so agree that it is VERY importanant too eat a nutritious breakfast. That is how we fuel our body to face the day.
