Regular Saturday Recipe Delay/Future of MaFF Monday

We just wanted to let you know that due to sickness in our home, our regular Saturday recipe had to be delayed.  We should be able to serve it later this week.

Also, our MaFF Monday parties have come to an end.  I apologize for the abrupt end and for not updating about this sooner.  The Christmas series has had me busy and I am evaluating some other potential ideas for a different direction here at The Saturday Evening Pot.  The MaFF Monday parties have been fun, and I deeply appreciate the faithful participation from some of you.  There are so many linky party opportunities, I just decided I wanted to look at some other ideas!

We hope you all have a wonderful week.

DIY Beaded Baby Spoons {Christmas Gift Idea}: Day 56 of The 100-Day Countdown to Christmas

When I saw these precious beaded baby spoons, I thought what a great stocking stuffer for our littlest foodie!  If you don't have a baby yourself to buy for this year, maybe you have a new baby niece, nephew, or cousin.  Of course, these would make a great baby gift also.  I love them.

Photo used with permission; Credit: April, Cup of Delight

They come to us from April, again, at Cup of Delight.  Head on over to Cup of Delight for the information about how to make them.

Some of our baby girl's favorite toys has been the play kitchen and food.  She was quite unimpressed with baby toys, but once she could sit up and hold onto things, the play food was immediately a hit.  If you've got a small child you're buying for this year who does not have one, a play kitchen with some play food sets would be a great idea to consider.  We love toys like this that encourage imaginative play.

Candy Cane Topiary Tree: Day 58 of The 100-Day Countdown to Christmas

Who says food is just for eating, right?  Take a look at this cute candy cane topiary tree (Remember the peppermint bark Christmas trees?  This topiary tree is also from Dollar Store Crafts!):

Photo used with permission; Credit: Dollar Store Crafts

Can you guess how much it costs to make this?  I know.  I'm not good at guessing that kind of stuff either.  Would you believe it costs around 6 bucks to make this?  Head over to Dollar Store Crafts for more information about how to make this yourself.

What would gift ideas for foodies be without Candy Land and other fun games centered around food?  The Well-Fed Son loves to play Candy Land.  Maybe we need to add a few more options of "foodie games" to our game collection.  A few options:

We decided to start a family tradition of giving our children a game every year for Christmas.  We definitely want some non-electronic play options in our home, and games are also a fun family night activity.  What's your child/children's favorite game to play?

Before you leave the party, don't forget to check out our current giveaway if you have not already (also remember there are ways to enter each day, if you'd like) and the ideas from the Christmas Smorgasbord!  So far, the top two viewed links have been the Christmas Love and my Christmas Pinterest Board.  We'd love for more of you to link-up also.  Your post does not have to be a new one and you are welcome to link more than one.

DIY Recipe Book {Gift Idea}: Day 60 of The 100-Day Countdown to Christmas

Foodies have lots and lots of recipes.  :)  Wouldn't this be a cute gift for a Foodie to put his/her favorite recipes in?

Photo used with permission; Credit: April, Cup of Delight

This was made by April at Cup of Delight as a graduation gift, but I'm thinking it would be a neat stocking stuffer for, say, a college student filled with favorite recipes from home.  Or what about a gift for a grandparent with "kid-friendly" recipes the grandchild can make with grandma?  Or if your family does something special for a shut-in, what about giving this with some favorite family recipes that would be easy to make?  It could be made with a more masculine design for a male recipient who enjoys cooking.  The possibilities are endless.

And another gift idea for today is a recipe calendar...  here are a few to choose from:

Disclosure:  For your shopping convenience, we are including a link when possible for each gift idea so that you can purchase if you know someone who'd enjoy it. These are affiliate links, through which we are paid a commission percentage from each purchase.  We are donating 100% of the profits from the Christmas event through our blog to The Spoon Foundation.  We are passionate about helping provide good nutrition to children struggling with malnourishment. I'm thinking a recipe for each day of the year is like getting a Christmas gift every day!

Welcome Women Living Well Ultimate Blog Bash Partiers!

For some time now, I have enjoyed participating in Women Living Well Wednesday link-up parties, so I was excited when Courtney announced a couple of weeks ago that she would be hosting a Blog Bash.  Blog parties are always a lot of fun!

Let me introduce myself to those of you who may be new here.  I'm Anne, The Lucky Wife to The Chef, who does the vast majority of the cooking in our home (which I think qualifies me as one blessed wife, but I figured a lot of people might relate better to "lucky"...).  ;)  We decided towards the end of 2010 to start a food blog as a New Year's endeavor to share recipes and our passion for food with family and friends.

Of course, our initial audience was family and "old friends."  As we began exploring the blogosphere and interacting with other bloggers, our audience has grown to include new friends.  A quote I came across a few years ago that has stuck with me is, "Make new friends, but keep the old.  One is silver, the other is gold."  It's always fun making new friends... adding some silver to your life!  :)

Some of the Women Living Well community have been interested in, and hopefully enjoyed, some of the recipes or other posts we've shared at Wednesday parties.  If you've visited us before and are back again, we'd like to say thank you and welcome you to our little corner of the internet.

I thought I would share a favorite recipe that's one of The Chef's newer creations:

It's bursting with flavor and really delicious, and it's a part of our Feast of the Ages series, which I think you might enjoy checking out also.  The most popular recipe from that series has been the Lemon Lime Ice Cream Soda Shots with Banana Pudding Discs a close second.

So far, we've served a variety of different types of recipes, including quite a few low-allergenic recipes, as our family monitors the amount of certain foods in our diet due to food sensitivities.  We also have shared other types of food posts that have been popular, including:

Lunchbox Ideas
Beauty, Body Image and Anorexia
Debt-Free Living/Dave Ramsey
Mom-Friendly Recipes

Crockpot/Slow Cooker recipes are always a hit.  And if you love Christmas as much as we do, I think you'd enjoy our 100-Day Countdown to Christmas series going on right now.  Be sure to check out our great Christmas cookbook giveaway also that ends Sunday.

I hope you find some delicious recipes you think your family would enjoy trying while you are here!  A few that we rotate through our weekly menus regularly are Crockpot Turkey Meatloaf, Chuckwagon Beans and Squash and Goat Cheese Casserole.

I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your blog through this party.  While you are here... would you mind sharing what type of recipe you are most interested in finding when you visit food blogs?  We always enjoy feedback from our readers!

Have a blessed week...

Apple Sausage Pilaf with Pecans

Fall is my favorite season.  I love when the weather turns cooler, the leaves begin to change colors and fall from the trees, and I get to enjoy warm foods like soups, hot chocolate and apple cider!  Not long after we started our Feast of the Ages series, for which we have yet to serve the final course (for those of you following it, it's coming soon!), The Chef developed a recipe called, Apple "Cider" Soup, for the 5th course.  It was unique and delicious.

We are excited to be guest blogging a recipe, Apple Sausage Pilaf with Pecans, over at EKat's Kitchen today that also uses apple cider as an ingredient.  I never would have imagined using apple cider in this way, but it gave wonderful flavor to this dish.

I have not really eaten too many pilafs, but the ones I have had always seem to taste basically the same.  The Chef and I get bored with eating the same old flavors over and over again.  If you like pilaf and, like us, enjoy trying recipes that have an "unexpected" ingredient, I think you will like this one!  It's perfect for your recipes-to-try this fall Pinterest board.  ;)

If you like what you see at EKat's Kitchen while visiting for this recipe, you'll want to stay tuned to our Christmas series because she's got some yummy recipes and great tips coming up soon.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar and a Recipe Collection {Day 62 of The 100-Day Countdown to Christmas}

We are going to start today with some gift ideas centered around The Very Hungry Caterpillar, written by one of the most beloved children's authors, Eric Carle.  An excerpt from his bio on the "official Eric Carle website":
The themes of his stories are usually drawn from his extensive knowledge and love of nature -- an interest shared by most small children.  Besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them...
Carle says, "With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates—will they be friendly?
I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun.”
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was a first favorite of The Well-Fed Son, and I suspect it will be for The Well-Fed Daughter also, since its story centers around another interest shared by small children... food.  We own the book and may consider the game as a Christmas gift for this year:

And now, for some delicious Christmas recipe ideas from Jerri at Simply Sweet Home.  If you missed the feature from her on a previous day of this series, that recipe is included here also.  Wouldn't the very hungry caterpillar love to feast on these:

Classic Vegetable Beef Soup Recipe {With a twist}

Everybody and their brother has a recipe for vegetable beef soup.  The recipes vary as much as the cars that you see on the highway, but MINE is different.  ;)  It is different because it isn't really, technically my recipe.  It has its origin with my mom.

I made vegetable beef soup a few times in college, and it was good but bland.  I asked my mom, who is a superior baker and great cook, for an idea to kick it up a little.  She informed me that her trick was V8 juice.  I tried it, and she's right.

Now, over the years I have tweaked it a little and made it my own.  Frozen vegetables instead of canned, minced garlic and the addition of mushrooms are just a few of the tweaks.  The Lucky Wife loves it.  End of story.

Enjoy.

Classic Vegetable Beef Soup

Ingredients:
  • 1 2-3 pound London Broil or other lean beef roast
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 8-ounce package portobello mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, scrubbed and diced
  • 1 16-ounce package frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes, with liquid
  • 16 ounces V8 juice
  • water
  • kosher salt
  • garlic powder
  • cracked black pepper, if desired
  • approximately 3 tablespoons olive oil
Cooking Directions:
  1. Cut beef roast into half-inch cubes.  Sprinkle with salt, garlic powder (and black pepper if desired).
  2. Heat 6-quart non-stick stockpot over medium heat until hot.  Add oil and onion.  Saute until translucent.
  3. Add mushrooms and minced garlic and saute until mushrooms are soft.  (May need to add more oil as mushrooms absorb oil quickly.)
  4. Once mushrooms are softened, add diced beef and stir with wooden spoon until meat is brown on all sides.  Liquid should start to accumulate in the bottom of the stockpot.  Turn temperature down to medium-low in order to prevent liquid from evaporating.
  5. Once beef has browned on all sides, add enough water to cover.  Season with salt, garlic powder, (and pepper, if desired).  Cover and simmer on low heat for 1 to 1.5 hours or until beef is very tender.  (NOTE: May have to add water as beef cooks and I usually taste test the beef after about 45 minutes in order to check tenderness and seasoning.)
  6. Once beef is tender, add tomatoes, potatoes, mixed vegetables, V8 juice and more water (Approximately 3 cups - You want to add enough water to achieve the desired consistency; the more water, the thinner the broth.)
  7. Simmer for approximately 20-30 more minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender.  Taste test and add more salt (and pepper) as desired.  (NOTE: The V8 juice contains sodium.  Use caution when adding salt.)

Christmas Holiday Soup Recipe: Day 64 of The 100-Day Countdown to Christmas

I have been amazed by some of the unique and delicious recipes I have come across while putting together this series!  Have you ever seen anything like this before?

Photo used with permission; Credit: Dawn on the Amazon Captains Blog

I've never seen a recipe for a Christmas soup before, and what a beautiful, festive soup, too!  It comes from a fascinating blog, as well, written by the President and Captain of Dawn on the Amazon Tours and Cruises in Peru.  You can read the interesting story of its founding here and get the recipe for the Christmas Holiday Soup here, which they serve to guests who have come for more than once cruise at Dawn on the Amazon.  What a special treat!

Our gift idea for you today is a children's books about soup, by none other than Mercer Meyer:

We came across this book one day at the library, and even though we have not checked it out yet or read it, I am familiar with the author, so figured it's bound to be a good one.
